- 1. Schedule a house inspection again once you’re convinced this is the right abode for you. Scrutinize every nook and cranny weeks ahead from the day. Even a new house has imperfections here and there. Make sure all the essentials are working. This includes the electricity and water; you can check the electrical outlets and drainage system for this.
- 2. We are not all trained to do house repairs and it would be a disaster to be an instant DIY-er. Hire a professional handyman to do all the dirty work (painting, electrical, plumbing, etc.).
- 3. You may now set a repair day. This may take days depending on the difficulty of the job at hand. Never put this one off to avoid unnecessary inconvenience once you settled down.
- 4. Change all the locks. Don’t compromise the security of yours and your family. Buy new sets of locks and keys for every gate and door (or even windows) of your new home. Change your doorknobs with those that have a “double-lock” feature.
- 5. All that fixing and painting must have left a trail of dirt, trash, smudges, and debris. You don’t want to move in to a horrific – err – unkempt house, do you? Thoroughly clean each part of the house, especially the bathroom and kitchen.
- 6. After doing the necessary repairs and house cleaning, the next task is to gather your moving kit. Box your utility scissors, cutters, packaging tape, and a roll of plastic rope. Add some common tools such as hammer, screwdriver, nails and screws, wrench, and long nose. Collect a stack of sturdy cardboard boxes.
- 7. You have to admit, this is only your opportunity and not to mention a perfect time to de-clutter. Throw away that which you no longer need. If that china cabinet has to go, so be it. Be mindful how you’ll pack your fragile belongings as well.
- 8. Spare time to label the boxes and indicate clearly in bold script if it contains breakable things. For example, label the first box as box no. 1 and so on. In a separate paper, write down the assigned number of that box and indicate its contents.
- 9. Prepare a box of essentials for your first night at your new house such as toiletries and a change of clothes. You don’t want to sleep in on dirty clothes after all the unpacking you’ve done, right?
- 10. Clean the house before you go as a courtesy to the next dweller of your soon-to-be old home.
- 11. Hire a reliable moving company. Communicate well with the moving guys and always be polite. The first thing they need to know is which boxes have fragile stuff and what kind of treatment do they need to apply while handling the appliance and furniture.
- 12. Don’t forget to revisit your list to make sure all your stuff are complete and in good condition.
- 13. While you’re at it, treat the moving guys to a hearty snack. They deserve it after all the hard work they’ve done—a little act of kindness can go a long way.
